Dans le domaine de la haute tension la s\u00e9paration des contacts ne suffit pas pour couper le courant instantan\u00e9ment.<br \/>\nLorsque les contacts se s\u00e9parent, le courant continue de circuler et un arc \u00e9lectrique temporaire se forme entre les contacts mobiles et les contacts fixes. Pour \u00e9teindre l\u2019arc \u00e9lectrique, il faut que le courant d\u2019arc devienne et reste nul. En faisant varier la vitesse d\u2019ouverture et la distance entre les contacts, on influence grandement la puissance et la dur\u00e9e de l\u2019arc \u00e9lectrique.
